The Schwarzer Adler can trace its origins back to 1524. The venerable building has always served as a place to stay, which earns the Schwarzer Adler a very special position amongst South Tyrol’s historic hotels.
Since its founding, the Schwarzer Adler has been synonymous with hospitality, quality, and elegance. Each stone and corner of the building speaks of history, tradition, and the spirit of bygone days. From the beginnings to today

The centuries have left their mark in Sterzing. As the town itself changed and transformed, the hotel adapted and underwent transformations that made it what it is today. The ancient walls of this one-of-a-kind historic hotel in South Tyrol hold countless stories of generations past that form the bedrock of its unique identity. Its long and eventful history – along with the stories that people from far and wide have experienced here – not only lend our historic hotel in South Tyrol’s northernmost town its character, but also create an aura that still attracts guests from all over the world today.

The milestones of South Tyrol’s historic hotel

1524-1540

A single establishment with hospitality permit was created from two adjacent buildings.

1534

Doctor and naturalist Paracelsus stayed at the Schwarzer Adler and felt right at home.

1553

The Schwarzer Adler was issued an alcohol licence.

1896

From an advertisement: “Comfortably appointed guest rooms. Exquisite cuisine. The best renowned wines. Fine dining room. Reading parlour with numerous papers and periodicals.” 

1936

The bar with the fresco entitled “The Sterzinger Moos maids” by Bolzano painter Albert Stolz was created in the cellar once used for Speck bacon.

2009

The Schwarzer Adler closed its doors.

2020-2024

In 2020, entrepreneurs from the surroundings of Vipiteno joined together with the owners, the Mühlsteiger family, to transform this historically significant hotel, which is also of great importance for Sterzing, into something truly special.

The company Schwarzer Adler GmbH was founded.

Remodelling and renovation.

2024

November 22nd 2024 | The historic hotel reopens its doors.  

Sofia Pertoll from Appiano sulla Strada del Vino takes over as general manager of the hotel.  

Peter and Thomas Stuefer from Sterzing manage the Italian Restaurant.
